The TEAM Meeting began Wednesday evening using Appreciative Inquiry. AI is a positive change tool for discovering what is healthy and working well and then building on success. It begins with person-to-person conversations that encourage story-telling and focus on each person’s experiences, and then expands to larger and larger groups recognizing and appreciating the effective things they already do. Then participants collectively decide what they want to carry into the future.

One way that LLL Leaders are currently using AI is illustrated by the report below:

At TEAM 2004, a small group met to talk about ways we might use AI in our LAD work (there is an email work group discussing this in depth—let Alison Parkes or Karin Gausman, (KarinLLL@aol.com) know if you are interested in participating, or if you have ideas to relay to the group). Some suggestions from our small group at TEAM were:

  • Adapt the subjective part of the SAR (the second part, with questions about how LAD personnel are working) to use AI. For instance, instead of listing all the articles they wrote that period and sessions presented, the form might ask: “During this period, what have you been involved with or done (e.g. articles, sessions, etc.) that was especially noteworthy for you? What gave you satisfaction, inspired you, or was very effective?”
  • We talked about using AI in application or pre-application dialogue. For example: “Tell me about times in your life when you used LLL philosophy of mothering through breastfeeding. What aspects of that worked well for you, or helped you deepen your relationship with your baby?”
  • We discussed using AI ideas when recruiting: “Tell me about a time you felt you had really helped an Applicant understand the Leader’s role, or when you participated in an activity that used your skills for the benefit of LLL.”
