World “Rock” for Breastfeeding

Our 2003 World Walk for Breastfeeding wasn’t at all a walk. Instead, our Great Bend Group collected donations for a chance to win a glider rocker. The glider rocker was donated to our Group by a local furniture store (the same store that donated a rocker two years ago for our baby shower). All it took was a phone call to the furniture store and I was told “sure, just come in whenever you want to pick out the rocker”. The retail value of the rocker donated was $500 and it was really beautiful.

The suggested donation for a ticket was one dollar or six tickets for five dollars. All members were encouraged to try and collect twenty five dollars in donations. We sold the tickets from August 1st through September 30th and advertised our drawing at two exhibits during this time: the Rainbow’s End Art’s and Crafts festival and the Great Bend Women’s Expo. We also had tickets available at the Completely Kids children’s clothing store in Great Bend for the month of August and had the rocker on display at the store.

As an incentive for our Group members to collect donations, we had purchased a $100 gift certificate from the Completely Kids store prior to our fundraiser and promoted this incentive for the top fundraiser in our Group (Leaders excluded).

I personally sent out hundreds of letters again this year for the Walk (see “Letters to Elicit Donations”) and included six drawing tickets with each of the letters. I sent the letters to family, friends, and mothers who I have helped through phone calls and home visits over the years.

In all, our Group collected over $3,000 in donations for chances to win the glider rocker. We also donated 100% of our breast pump rental and sales income for the month of August to the World “Rock” for Breastfeeding (see “Coopertive Action: It‘s a Good Thing“ under the Sales fundraising ideas). Our grand total for ticket donations and the breast pump sales and rental was $4,385, making this a very successful and easy fundraiser for our Group, Area, Division, and most importantly, La Leche League International.
