Makit Fundraiser
from Katrina Kaeck of North Carolina

Our Group (thanks to LLL Hendersonville for the idea) did a Make A Plate fundraiser this year. It was a lot of fun, the Group made money and we forever have these wonderful plates that our children made! That’s what I call a win, win, win situation. I will definitely do this fundraiser again.

Step One: Call or contact the Makit Products company and get your kit. www.makit.com or 1-800-248-9443. The kit includes paperwork for placing the actual plate order, instructions, a pack of markers, 50 round pieces of the special paper you will need to draw your plate on.

Step Two: Get the word out to the Group. I made a poster trifold out of a box we had gotten a bathroom mirror in. It was perfect! I cut up the Makit magazine and kit box and put all the details on it. I carried this everywhere!!! Sold plates to anyone that was interested! I also made up an instruction sheet with the details like: only use washable markers, do not get your paper folded or wet…really important stuff like that. I bought manilla envelopes and put an instruction sheet and plate paper in each. (I would not do this again. The envelopes were costly and moms who took them rarely brought them back completed.)

Step Three: What I did do that worked and cost nothing was to have a party. I invited everyone over for an open house 9-12 one day to actually do plates. It went great. A lot of moms came. And a lot of plates got done. (I ended up with 32 plates and four bowls in the final order! The Makit company has a lot of products besides plates. I recommended focusing on the plates cause that is what really sells.) I even had one mom bring her sister who was visiting from Texas and they still have the plates they had made as children. You could invest in stamp pads (make sure they are washable) for this since lots of moms wanted hand prints for grandma and many of these children are not old enough to draw anything! I had one mom who did a hand print plate for both grandmas and herself!

Step Four: Place your order. Follow the instructions given by the company and send off those plate papers! It doesn’t take them long to get the plates back to you. It’s fun to be the Leader getting the package and getting to look at all those adorable plates!!! And when you pass them out at meetings the moms who didn’t do one want to know if you are going to do it again!!!

Dollars and Sense: The initial kit costs about $3.50. You can charge whatever you want to for the plates. I initially was charging $10 per plate but ended up reducing the price to $8. I think the Hendersonville Group charges $7. It costs $3.95 to process each plate and there is a little shipping charge too, but not too much ($10 for 31-40 drawings). When they send your order back they send you a complimentary kit to get you started on your next fundraiser! I can’t wait!
